David Gates is one of my favourite songwriters. If, Make it With You, Guitar Man, Everything I own (even Boy George's version wasn't too bad) ... a constant stream of brilliant songs.
Diary may not be one of their most famous tunes yet it is amazing in its sentiment of selfless love. The twist in the story is not that the singer realises the diary is not about him. It's that instead of feeling jealous, he wishes his wife happiness with her new love.
It's deliciously subversive and seems to go against the grain. Or perhaps, we should forget our egos and rejoice in other people's happiness even at the cost of our own?
